The main theme of ‘Guardianship' is supported by the local iwi story of the ‘Flight of Reipae’, the name of the adjacent mountain volcano, Mt Wellington and by the Bill Hammond painting ’ The Watchers’. The watchful are expressed in the wall and cantilever roof forms suspended over a green landscape, the roof forms angled up in gesture to the mountain.
Various building heights were used to respond to the location of the buildings on the site. Units with a lower scale or slightly deeper shadows were positioned closer to the residential and school area whereas more upright brighter units with privacy screens were set against the commercial areas.
Lower buildings were placed in the center of the development to help in providing long landscaped vistas along the shared laneways. Clever use was made of building materials to assist in Aesthetics, building performance and reduced construction costs.
