Hayama AIAA
Auckland International Airport , New Zealand
The site was very hard to identify from a distance without any exterior walls, so we persuaded the airport to allow us to add signage onto the front of an existing column.
Our team designed Hayama’s Airside restaurant at Auckland International Airport to maintain the chain’s natural and authentic Japanese aesthetic while enhancing it with a unique, upscale twist for traveler’s. Inspired by Hayama’s signature black, white, and red branding, we opted for a striking black-stained timber finish, creating a “nighttime dining” vibe that distinguishes this location from Hayama’s other Auckland outlets.
In this high-traffic, space-limited airport setting, we strategically added high-level, freestanding communal tables, allowing traveler’s to dine comfortably with space for luggage. Around a central column, we created intimate, dining-height seating featuring Japanese-inspired touches, including hanging cushions and a traditional Japanese teapot display, which add an authentic feel. Scalloped tiles on columns echo Hayama's seafood-focused menu, creating a cohesive brand experience.
Recognising the challenge of visibility without exterior walls, we worked with Auckland International Airport to implement custom signage on a nearby column, making Hayama easier to locate for passengers. The project has been celebrated for its creativity and functionality, even earning entry into an international design competition for airport retail, thanks to the positive response from both diners and airport landlords.
